On Sunday 2019 Feb 17, I found in the Sunday bulletin at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Mariposa, California "A Prayer for the Nation", by Thomas Jefferson. The problem is that he didn't write it, even though you can see claims that he did so at various places on the Internet, fostered by such outfits as the Congressional Prayer Caucus Foundation, an entity of the Christian Right which inexplicably styles itself as a non-partisan, non-political organization (wrong on both counts).

Why is the authorship of this prayer important? It's important because the assertion that Jefferson wrote this prayer reinforces the notion that the United States is a Christian nation, when in fact it's not a Christian nation.

Update: reaction from staff at St. Joseph's Church was that this issue was not important.
